True fact: babies are hardwired to look at and recognize faces. Why? Because it helps them bond with parents and caregivers. This starts at birth and continues on through babyhood. In fact, a baby will show interest in a picture that is an approximation of face, like a drawing of three dots that resemble eyes and a nose. Genius, right?
How can you provide this type of interaction for your baby, knowing his love of faces?
- Provide plenty of face time talking to your baby. Make faces, have fun and try for lots of eye contact.
- Make a photo album of family members and show it to your baby often. This is especially great if grandparents or other relatives live out of town.
- Read your baby books with lots of faces – preferably real faces. We highly recommend the Happy Healthy baby series by Free Spirit Publishing. Six fantastic books that show real babies doing what babies do – eat, rest, move, play, reach, and cuddle. Check them out in our store!
