Social stories help prepare children for transitions and experiences. You can modify this one, about getting a haircut, to fit the needs of your child. Have fun with it! Draw illustrations together or google images of children getting haircuts if you want to add a visual. These stories work well with most children and we recommend reading this one multiple times before the big haircut!
Today, I am getting a haircut.
Mommy will take me to the hair salon at 9:00.
I will sit in a special chair.
I will wear a cool cape. The cape will keep hair from getting on my clothes.
The stylist will use a spray bottle of water to make my hair wet. I can hold a towel over my eyes if I want to.
The stylist will brush my wet hair. She will be gentle. It will not hurt.
The stylist will cut my hair.
Cutting your hair doesn’t hurt because hair doesn’t have any feeling.
Cutting your hair and cutting your skin are not the same – cutting hair doesn’t hurt!
When I am done, I can take off the cape and hop off the chair.
Getting your hair cut isn’t so bad and it doesn’t hurt at all!
