kids are still learning. It is up to us parents to help them develop the resilience and problem solving skills that they will need to grow into healthy adults. Luckily, there is help in the form of Cheri Meiners’ book, Bounce Back! Bounce Back! is part of Free Spirit Publishing’s Being the Best Me series, which is meant for children ages 4-8.
From the back of the book: Resilience is the ability to recover or “bounce back” from problems, hurt, or loss. Critical for social and emotional health, resilience helps people feel happy, capable, and in charge of their lives.
Foster perseverance, patience and resilience in children with this unique and friendly book. Young children learn that even if they can’t change a problem, they can change the way they look at it and what they do about it. They discover ways to think and act that are positive, realistic, and helpful for bouncing back. They also learn to recognize people who can support them in times of difficulty.
Through engaging illustrations, the reader is taken through a series of tough situations which are written from the viewpoint of a child. A friend is moving away, a child falls during a basketball game, a mistake is made, a parent is sick – each situation is met with a positive solution where the child chooses to be helpful, patient and resilient.
As in most Free Spirit Publishing books, Bounce Back! has a helpful parenting section in the back which encourages parents to reinforce the ideas in the book. This includes key words to know, such as “admit”, “brave” and “choose”, as well as discussion questions for you and your child. There are suggestions for games to play, art activities, and even an idea for a “bounce back” song to sing when things get tough.
Each book in this series is fantastic. Bounce Back! is no exception. It is a great way to encourage your child to grasp the all important skills of resilience and picking oneself up after a set-back. Highly recommended!
